Description

Pictograph pottery by Lillooet artist Patrick Leach. Original hand thrown ceramics with hand made glazes. Based on ancestral images found in pictographs within St’át’imc Nation Territory.

About the artist:
Patrick is from the St’át’imc Nation Territory.  He was born near his mother’s Coast Salish community,  Snuneymuxw First Nation and was raised in the community of T’ít’q’et near Lillooet, BC as a member of the P’egpig’7lha (Frog) clan.

His creations start with hand-thrown porcelain clay, which are then hand-carved and glazed landscapes, geometric designs and scenes from ancient traditional rock paintings and basket weavings. Some have even been intricately carved on the inside, these having several glazes (two firing for the glaze on the inside). Patrick was mentored by Erdman Tuemp, a local pottery master in Lillooet. They were soon joined by Patrick's brother, musician George Leach, who, during his down time from touring, apprenticed under renowned Six Nations artist Steve Smith. Together the three learned how to combine the processes and styles that have become the foundation for the pottery that Patrick creates today.
